Shawn SmithDon't dis-my-ability™ Consultation Services Inc.

Prior to being diagnosed with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) at age 30, Shawn Smith took four years to finish three years of high school and 32 attempts to earn the 18 credits required to graduate, including failing grade 10 math four times. He was able to sneak into college to play football and managed to earn a Bachelor of Arts Degree with a whopping 2.3 GPA.

Fast forward to being diagnosed and taking prescribed medication, Shawn went back to upgrade as a mature student, taking five courses, and then he earned a new GPA of 3.7 in 2010. He was accepted to the Masters of Education Program in Counseling Psychology at the University of New Brunswick on academic probation, and he graduated at the top of his class a year later.

Shawn Smith often boasts that his company did something that no other company could do since 2002 - keep him employed for more than 18 consecutive months! Although he's never been fired from a job, he moved around a lot. He kept getting laid off, or his work contracts would expire.

Shawn felt as if he had no other choice but to start his own business. Having worked in the disability-related non-profit sector, he felt that a lot of programs and services were created and sold by people without disabilities for people with disabilities. He then saw a gap that he could fill as an individual who self-identified as being neurodiverse.

Located in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Don't dis-my-ability™ Consultation Services Inc., is an innovative, multifaceted company specializing in the emerging field of Neurodiversity. Don't dis-my-ability™ offers counseling services, workshops, podcasts, and much more.

The growth of Shawn's company has not been without its challenges. "The biggest challenge I faced was recognizing that although my business is local, my market is global. I am sought after around the world for my unique insight, everywhere but my home province. I was forced to adapt and find innovative ways to gain positive exposure," explains Shawn.

Since launching his company, Shawn won the national 2017 Startup Canada Resilient Entrepreneur Award. He has also been featured on television, newspapers and podcasts, and he played the role of expert panelist during the Trailblazing 2016 and 2017 events. He also recently became an official contributor to The Mighty which is a digital health community created to empower and connect people facing health challenges and disabilities. Shawn's social media followers include actors, professional athletes, and thought leaders who regularly like and share his posts.

"The advice I share with aspiring entrepreneurs is to get involved with your local startup community. The startup community is where I started to gain traction and turn heads," Shawn says.

In order to continually improve his company, Shawn is working on recording his new podcast called "The Don't dis-my-ability™ Podcast with Shawn Smith".  He is also developing an online parenting platform. The platform would allow its subscribers access to different content and resources to help them parent their neurodiverse child.
