Lisa Gillam has been sharing her love of music with children for over 20 years as a classroom music teacher and private instructor. In 2010, she decided to march to the beat of her own drum and established Munchkin Music Factory, teaching children ages 3 to 11.
Munchkin Music Factory is a unique program that focuses on voice, piano and ukulele instruction. Lisa developed her own curriculum from scratch that includes original music written just for the munchkins. The program focuses on composition, allowing children from grades 1 through 5 to compose and perform their own piece of music. Lisa's focus on composition came naturally, as she is an avid singer-songwriter and released her debut self-titled solo album after returning from teaching in Asia for 4 years.
Lisa has been continuously growing the Munchkin Music Factory for the past 5 years, so much so that she had to move to a bigger location to accommodate all her munchkins. Lisa was not afraid to take on the challenges that can come with expansion because she's a leader — a quality she believes is imperative for entrepreneurs.
Being a natural teacher, Lisa doesn't skip a beat when it comes to offering advice to aspiring and established entrepreneurs. She firmly believes in the power of people — building relationships and networking are essential to growing as an entrepreneur. She suggests establishing an advisory board and surrounding yourself with people who will provide encouragement, but also aren't afraid to give some tough love. Being coachable and able to take constructive criticism and opinions is also critical for succeeding in business.
In 2013, Lisa won the Newfoundland and Labrador Organization of Women Entrepreneurs (NLOWE) Entrepreneur of the Year Award, which demonstrated her exceptional business acumen and contribution to her province and community. This was a pivotal moment for Lisa, as it signified that she was on the right track towards growing her business.
Lisa, being a go getter all her life, knew that she had to succeed in business and to do that she would constantly have to evolve and challenge herself as an individual and a business woman. She enrolled in a mentorship program with Propel ICT, Atlantic Canada's start-up accelerator, and was chosen to represent the province during Demo Day, which featured emerging Atlantic Canadian start-ups pitching their companies to an audience of hundreds of investors, influencers and potential partners.
When Lisa isn't busy taking the business world by storm or playing music with the munchkins, she sings in the prestigious Lady's Cove Women's Choir; is a member of the musical trio, Trinity; and enjoys working out.
