Is a franchise right for you?

July 17, 2017 - Tags: Startup

Buying a franchise could be a good way for you to start your own business. Franchises can lessen the risk of starting a business by letting you use an established brand and proven products. But, buying a franchise does mean agreeing to run your business according to certain rules and standards. It could be a good option for first time business owners with less experience.

Fast food often comes to mind when talking about franchises. Fast food companies have had success selling franchises, but it isn't the only opportunity you could consider. You can buy franchises in several different industries. There are opportunities in automotive, beauty, finance, recreation, travel, hospitality, home services, and business services. There are many other opportunities. You can find searchable lists of Canadian franchise opportunities online.

A franchise doesn't have to be a brick-and-mortar business either. There are franchises that can be run from home. These could be businesses where there isn't a need for special facilities or where you go to the customers. If you can start a franchise from home it could be a smaller investment.

It is important to remember that while buying a franchise is a way of starting your own business, you would not be going into business by yourself. This could be both positive and negative. The franchisor you buy from would allow you to use their brand on the condition that you run their business according to their standards. They may offer support and training to help with that. This can be a more secure arrangement but it may not work if you‘re more independent minded. The franchisor will provide you with a disclosure document clarifying their expectations, and you should read it carefully.

You might also consider similar business opportunities. Licensing and distributorships can offer security similar to a franchise but with different obligations.

Franchises allow companies to expand the reach of their brand quickly and these can be exciting opportunities in growing sectors. Buying a franchise could be right for you but it's important to know the risks and responsibilities
