CBN helps businesses get off the ground

Bill is a computer engineer who was recently laid off due to tough economic times. He was using Facebook to network with friends and former colleagues to get leads on a new career path, when a link shared by his friend Maya caught his eye. Bill hadn't really considered starting a business, but with few employment opportunities available, he was intrigued by the idea, so he went to the site. While reading the blog post, he was surprised at how many people were taking advantage of the recession to branch out on their own. He clicked through to the section on Starting a Business, and found great information on developing his ideas, writing his business plan, and on registering his business. But what about money? Bill had some money left from his severance package, but not enough to get his business off the ground. He had a great idea for a new technology that he wanted to bring to market. Before he would start generating revenue, he would need to spend some time researching and hiring developers. Bill went back to the home page and found a search for government grants, loans and financing. He made relevant selections to begin his search. Bill lives near the New Brunswick and Nova Scotia border. He wasn't sure if he should locate his business in New Brunswick or Nova Scotia, so he selected both. He then selected "youth" from the demographic list, chose a few industry sectors that might match up with his ideas and clicked for the results. He found a number of relevant financing programs from both provinces. Now armed with this information, Bill set off to start developing his ideas and his plan. But first, he subscribed to the blog's RSS feed to stay up to date on issues that might impact his business.

CBN helps established businesses grow

Stephanie owns an established catering business and is thinking of expanding to include manufacturing processed foods, based on popular menu items. She saw her friend Bill send out a post on Twitter about government financing and decided to check out the Canada Business website. As Stephanie is extremely busy, she wanted the information to be as specific as possible to her needs, so she used the advanced features to customize the site. She chose both her current industry and the one she wants to move into. Stephanie wanted to find out about regulations that might affect her business, related to product approvals and marketing, in particular. She was pleased to find information on general rules about labelling and specific regulations for the food industry all in one place! She also decided to check what permits and licences she might need.

She saw a few permits she didn't have and clicked to get more information. Stephanie had to rush off to prepare a dinner for 200 people. She made a note to come back later and read through more information on growth and financing that may be helpful in expanding her business.
