If you are a tobacco retailer in Ontario, new legislation that was passed on June 1, 2011 could affect your business. The legislation brought in tighter controls on all types of raw leaf tobacco grown in, imported into and exported out of Ontario and on businesses involved in the tobacco trade.

If you are a tobacco retailer looking for suppliers, you can only legally deal with businesses that appear on the provincial Tobacco Tax Registrant List. Tobacco businesses that need to be registered include:

  • Manufacturers
  • Wholesalers
  • Importers
  • Exporters
  • Interjurisdictional transporters

When you place an order, these registered tobacco suppliers are required to ask you for your Tobacco Retail Dealer's Permit.

Under the new law, you may also be charged larger fines for buying or selling contraband tobacco, based on the amount involved, and authorities have greater power to seize illegal products. The new rules will be completely rolled out over the next two years and are expected to be in full effect by April 1, 2013.
